Mobile app economy singled out [Bangkok Post, Thailand :: ]

(Bangkok Post (Thailand) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 18--The rapid rollout of digital lifestyle services and mobile apps coupled with the trend of the Internet of Things are pushing companies towards a "mobile app economy".

Chua I-Pin, vice-president for Asia South of CA Technologies, a leading software firm, said the market for mobile apps is expected to be worth US$143 billion by 2016, up from $53 billion in 2012. By 2017, the number of mobile app users globally is projected at 4.4 billion, each with an average of five internet-connected devices.

Internet-connected devices or machines are expected to reach 75 billion by 2017 thanks to the proliferation of mobile applications. A mobile customer averages 26 downloaded apps per smartphones.

Mr Chua said the app economy drives demand for development and operations (DevOps) software that enables users to seize market opportunities and reduce operating time. DevOps software is still in the early adoption stage, as it has only been deployed for two years.

Suthas Wongwiseskul, general manager of CA Thailand, said 57% of Thais are expected to use mobile apps this year, compared with 40% last year. The country's mobile apps market was worth $480 million last year.

Mr Suthas said banks, telecoms and the retail sector are likely to quickly adopt DevOps methodology and tools to enhance their business competitiveness and improve efficiency, particularly when the Asean Economic Community arrives.

CA Technologies released its tech insight report after surveying 1,300 senior IT leaders in Asia-Pacific. Some 21% of respondents said IT is crucial in driving business development and creating new business opportunities. Up to 89% view IT as playing a vital role to their business management and operations.

The report found 60% of IT budgets for three years will shift to innovation projects while 40% will go for IT maintenance costs. Half of IT budgets now are used for maintenance.
