Conservation Leaders Join Western Environmental Law Center's Board of Directors

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) EUGENE, Ore., July 15 -- The Western Environmental Law Center issued the following news release: The Western Environmental Law Center ("WELC"), a nonprofit public-interest environmental law firm, is proud to announce the addition of two conservation leaders to its Board of Directors. Joining the board are former New Mexico 8th Judicial District Judge Peggy Nelson and Karin Sheldon, President of Four Echoes Strategies, a consulting firm providing policy analysis and strategic advice concerning Western environmental issues.

"We are thrilled to welcome to our Board two of the foremost leaders in protecting the American West's treasured landscapes and iconic wildlife," said Erik Schlenker-Goodrich, WELC Executive Director.

Nelson served as New Mexico's 8th Judicial District Judge for 18 years. She began her career in Taos, New Mexico working five years--two as Executive Director--for Northern New Mexico Legal Services. In addition, Nelson provided low-cost and free legal services for the Community Law Center, and subsequently entered into private practice and contracted with the state as Public Defender.

"I have admired WELC and its work for decades and am delighted that in turning my focus and energy to issues involving the environment, climate, and water, I might serve this organization as a member of its Board. I am proud that I can assist the good work being done," noted Nelson.

From 2007 to 2013, Karin Sheldon was President of Western Resource Advocates, a regional nonprofit environmental organization working on conservation issues in the West. Prior to 2007, Sheldon was Associate Dean for the Environmental Law Program, Professor of Law, and Director of the Environmental Law Center at Vermont Law School. Before joining the faculty at Vermont Law School in 1994, she was President of The Wilderness Society in Washington, D.C., a staff attorney with Earthjustice in Colorado, a partner in a public-interest law firm, and one of Ralph Nader's original "Raiders." "I am honored to join the Board of the Western Environmental Law Center," said Sheldon. "WELC is making a vital contribution to the future of the West by intelligent and vigorous defense of the region's priceless lands and resources." As Corrie Yackulic, President of Western Environmental Law Center's Board explained, "The addition of Peggy and Karin ensures that WELC will continue to ascend as an organization and that we will be able to meet the critical environmental challenges and opportunities facing the American West." Founded in 1993, the Western Environmental Law Center uses the power of the law to safeguard the wildlife, wildlands, and communities of the American West. The organization has offices in Eugene, Oregon; Taos, New Mexico; and Helena, Montana.
