Muhammad Isom is COO of MRT1 system [Business Times (Malaysia)]

(Business Times (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) KUALA LUMPUR: Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd has named Muhammad Isom Azis as chief operating officer (COO) of the soon-to-be completed mass rapid transit 1 (MRT1) system under Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd.

Prasarana said Muhammad Isom, who heads the Rolling Stock Department at Prasarana Integrated Management and Engineering Services, will head the operations for MRT1, which is expected to start operations in 2017.

In a statement, the company said Rapid Rail also operates the light rail transit (LRT) Ampang Line, LRT Kelana Jaya Line and the Monorail Line, which are led by their respective COOs.

Commenting on his appointment, Muhammad Isom said it is a big challenge for him, especially with the high expectations of Malaysians for the public transport service.

He said it is the beginning of a new era in the country's public transport system, bringing a new perspective to the industry and hopefully, new travelling trends as well.

"With all rail and bus networks of RapidKL, we should be looking at a ridership of more than one million per day." With more than 20 years of experience in railway project development, operations and maintenance, Muhammad Isom will lead a multi-disciplinary team of rail operations and engineering.

Muhammad Isom, who was a senior manager at KTM Berhad's Rail Department, joined Prasarana in November 2006.

He said his top priority is to set up a small working group to map out plans for MRT operations with the recruitment of skilled manpower.
