Remote access all areas [Newcastle Journal (England)]

(Newcastle Journal (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) GOOD news for rural web surfers last week, when the winners of a Pounds 10m government fund aimed at bringing superfast broadband to very remote areas of Britain were revealed.

Eight projects that use a variety of technologies have been shortlisted and will go through to the trial stage before deployment later this year. A company called Airwave wants to use TV 'white space' (unused frequencies) and deploy four next-generation wireless systems in North Yorkshire, while Avanti wants to trial a satellite broadband platform in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

With the government on track to hit their target of 95 per cent superfast coverage of the UK by 2017, the fund is intended to reach that final 5 per cent and, ultimately, help boost the rural economy.
