US Student Ambassadors Ready to Study Chinese at NCKUTAINAN, Taiwan --(Business Wire)-- National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosts an opening ceremony of the Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA) Summer Scholarship Program on July 1 to welcome the students coming from America. Most of them are first time to Taiwan. A total of 39 American students from 38 states with 33 universities participate in the TUSA program from July 1 to August 22, according to Wang Wei-Yung, dean of College of Liberal Arts, NCKU, who attended the ceremony and extended his warm welcome to the students. John Yeh representing the executive committee of TUSA program attended the ceremony and said, "I hope they will have a successful summer not only learning Chinese but learning about Taiwan culture and making friends in the program and outside the program." /p>
"I've never been to Taiwan before so I'm really excited about the activities outside the classroom as well as getting to know some Taiwanese students, eating the food which I hear is great, traveling some, learning about the culture and the history," according to Laporte-Oshiro. Shoshana A. Schoenfeld is a 19-year-old student from University of Chicago coming to NCKU to study Chinese. She said, "I'd really like to learn more Chinese and hopefully learn a lot about Taiwan and people here." To create closer friendships and understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Taiwan, the student ambassadors from the states will participate in a series of Mandarin (Chinese) language class, cultural learning, cultural tours, and lectures. The program will cover language classes with a total of 120 hours, according to the Chinese Language Center at NCKU. Also, the students will participate in 14 cultural courses including Taiwanese culture introduction, Chinese painting, Chinese Opera, Chinese cuisine, seal engraving, and tea ceremony. Trips to historical and ecological sites in Tainan, the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Tzu Chi Senior High School in Hualien, and Kaohsiung are also included.
