Walmart plans online fulfillment center in Plainfield [The Indianapolis Star :: ]

(Indianapolis Star (IN) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) June 19--Walmart plans to build a 1.2-million-square-foot facility in Plainfield and hire 300 new workers to process online orders, officials announced today.

The fulfillment center for online orders will open in 2015 before reaching full capacity in 2016, officials said.

Walmart, based in Bentonville, Ark., employs 2.2 million people worldwide and more than 36,000 in Indiana, according to a release from the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

Gov. Mike Pence welcomed the news.

"When the world's largest companies consider where to grow, Indiana is skyrocketing to the top of the location list," Pence said.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Walmart up to $2.9 million in conditional tax credits and up to $200,000 in training grants, according to the release. The company cannot receive those incentives until it makes good on hiring the promised number of Indiana workers.

"The town of Plainfield will consider additional incentives at the request of the Hendricks County Economic Development Partnership," the release stated.

Walmart plans to begin hiring workers for the center in October, officials said. The facility will be located at the AllPoints Midwest distribution park developed by Indiana-based Duke Realty and Browning.

The facility is one of several nationwide being opened by Walmart to handle its growing online sales.
