(Sport360 Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Suhail Al Areefi has become the Pro League Committee's (PLC) fifth CEO, following the resignation of Colin Smith, the governing body has confirmed.

Smith took up the role at the beginning of the 2012-13 season and oversaw the re-branding of the PLC's primary competition, the Pro League, to the Arabian Gulf League last summer.

A statement released by the PLC read: "The Pro League Committee's Executive Office has accepted the resignation of Colin Smith from his position as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Pro League Committee.

"The Executive Office has confirmed the appointment of Suhail Al Areefi as the new CEO of the PLC." Football in the UAE became professional ahead of the 2008-09 season, with Romy Gai as chief executive.

Carlo Nohra and Dr Khalid Mohammed Abdullah also held the post prior to Smith's appointment in the summer of 2012.
