New England Organization to Celebrate Women Leaders in Energy and Environment


BOSTON --(Business Wire)--

New England Women in Energy and Environment (NEWIEE) today announced the winners of its annual Achievement Awards. These awards celebrate the accomplishments of women leaders in the fields of energy and environment. This year, NEWIEE will honor four women who have achieved professional excellence within their area of specialty and have also served as mentors, actively paving the way to success for other women in similar professional fields. Special opening remarks will be delivered by The Boston Globe's Erin Ailworth. The event will be anchored by a keynote address from Karen Gordon Mills, who served in President Barack Obama's cabinet as the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration from 2009 until August 2013.

Recipients of the 2014 NEWIEE Achievement Awards are: Alicia Barton, Janet Gail Besser, and Elin Swanson Katz. Patricia Stanton will be presented with the NEWIEE Leadership Award.

Ms. Barton is the Chief Executive Officer of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and responsible for leading MassCEC's efforts to accelerate the success of the clean energy technology sector in Massachusetts. Since her appointment as CEO in August, 2012, Alicia has driven MassCEC's efforts to provide support for all aspects of the sector from early stage technology innovation, to clean energy project deployment and workforce development. Working in close coordination with the clean energy, environmental and economic development efforts of the Commonwealth,MassCEC's programs have helped deliver record job growth in the clean energy technology sector, while seeing rapid expansion of clean energy projects throughout Massachusetts.



Ms. Besser is Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs for the New England Clean Energy (News - Alert) Council, where she leads the Council's policy and advocacy efforts to achieve its mission to accelerate New England's clean energy economy to global leadership by building an active community of stakeholders and a world-class cluster of clean energy companies. Ms. Besser is also a member of the Board of Directors of PowerOptions, the leading energy buying consortium in Massachusetts for nonprofits, as well as state and municipal facilities.

Ms. Katz was appointed Connecticut's Consumer Counsel by Governor Dannel P. Malloy in 2011, and confirmed by the Legislature in 2012. She heads the Office of Consumer Counsel, an independent state agency that advocates on behalf of consumers in matters relating to electricity, water, natural gas, and telecommunications. The office has served as an independent voice for Connecticut's residents, municipalities, and businesses since 1975, working for reliable high-quality utility service at a reasonable cost, sensible public policies and legislation, and, particularly in recent times, effective utility storm response.


Ms. Stanton is a Senior Vice President of Policy & Advocacy for Conservation Services Group (CSG) and a nationally recognized expert in regulatory policy analysis and advocacy. She directs CSG's participation in emerging energy markets and public policies related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, carbon quantification, and the full range of demand resources. She provides technical support and serves as a liaison for company regions and executives, and oversees CSG's Clean Energy Markets, Policy and Advocacy team activities.

The awards will be presented at the NEWIEE fourth Annual Gala on April 8th at 6:00 PM at The Lenox Hotel.
