City's fire station set to be sold off ; OPINION JOHN CHALLIS ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES STAR IS THE 'BOYCIE' OF A NATION... [Sunday Mercury (England)]

(Sunday Mercury (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) AN iconic Midlands fire station is going to be put up for sale with the hope of bringing a seven-figure windfall for the cashstrapped 999 service. Fire crews will move out of the site in Copenhagen Street, Worcester, next year when their new stateof-the- art facility is finished at the Great Western Business Park.

The old station has been their home for more than 70 years and, when it goes, will end a chapter in the city's history.

Members of Hereford and Worcester Fire Authority agreed at a meeting last week that it will be sold, and also approved a marketing campaign to show potential buyers its potential. Hopes are high that it can deliver a huge, seven-figure sum for the cashstrapped fire service and be put to good use by new owners.

It is in a prime city centre location, situated just a few feet from the Guildhall, Worcester's High Street and just yards from the riverside.

But the authority agreed that, even if it took 18 months or longer, they would hold out to get the right offer and would work to get good value for money for council taxpayers. The committee voted to authorise a sale, with the next stage being to get an independent valuation from an agent. A marketing campaign would then launch aimed at enticing interest from developers and other interested parties.
