`Deleted files could be for upgrading' [New Straits Time (Malaysia)]

(New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SIMULATOR owners often delete data to free up memory.

Deleting files might also mean they were upgrading to a different version of their flight simulator software or changing the software, said SimFlightKL director and pilot Captain Amin Said.

He said simulator owners often added or removed different airports on their flight simulators.

This is because many flight simulators contained hundreds, if not thousands of airports.

"On our simulator, we have 24,000 airports, some are simply rendered while others are detailed." Another reason to delete files may be for upgrading. "For example, you may upgrade from Flight Simulator 9 (Microsoft, 2004) to Flight Simulator X (FSX). You could even change to X-Plane 10." Amin said FSX had a log file that recorded every flight.

There is a possibility that this file could be deleted, but forensics experts may be able to recover it.

Investigators examining the Malaysia Airlines pilot's flight simulator have found that several recent files in the machine, that could provide insight into the disappearance of flight MH370, had been deleted.

On Wednesday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said computer forensics experts were working round-the-clock to retrieve the deleted files.

"The police had invited several Boeing 777 operators, experts in flight simulators and information technology professionals to assist in the probe." On Friday, CBS News reported that the pilot's simulator hard disk was at the United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation's lab in Virginia, where its experts were trying to recover the deleted files.
