Hackers target Nato [Mercury, The (South Africa)]

(Mercury, The (South Africa) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) PARIS: Nato said a few of its websites had been targeted in a cyber attack claimed by Uk-rainian hackers in what appeared to be the latest bout of virtual warfare linked to the country's crisis.

Nato spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said the websites had been hit by a significant denial of service attack, but it had had "no operational impact".

In such attacks, hackers hijack multiple computers to flood a target with data, crippling the computer system.

Lungescu said experts were working to restore functions, but the websites were down for hours and there was still no access late yesterday.

The attack was claimed by a Ukrainian hacker group Cyber Berkut, the name given to the feared elite riot police involved in a bloody crackdown on protesters in Kiev.

On its website, www.cyber-berkut.org, the group said it had targeted three Nato websites over what it claimed was the alliance's interference in Ukraine and support of the "Kiev junta".

On March 8, British-based BAE Systems said dozens of computer networks in Ukraine had been infected by a cyber-weapon called Snake, which experts said was probably the work of Russian hackers. - Sapa-AFP The Mercury (c) 2014 Independent Newspapers (Pty) Limited.
