Increasing Support for Ontario Charities; Pilot Programs Launch Enhanced 50/50 Raffles

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Ministry of Finance Ontario is launching electronic 50/50 pilot programs with two major league sports organizations to help boost revenues for the province's charities.

The programs will be developed and launched by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation , and will enhance the existing manual, all-cash 50/50 charity raffle draws by introducing handheld mobile devices to sell and record raffle tickets. These devices will allow customers to pay for tickets with credit and debit cards in addition to cash. Beginning in fall 2014, the pilots will be launched at major sporting events in Ottawa and Toronto. The additional payment options for 50/50 draws will raise more funds for charities, increase prizes for customers, and also enhance the security, accuracy and accountability of raffles.

Supporting provincial charities is part of Ontario's economic plan that is creating jobs for today and tomorrow. The comprehensive plan and its six priorities focus on Ontario's greatest strengths - its people and strategic partnerships.

Quick Facts Expansion and full delivery of electronic 50/50 raffles across Ontario could generate more than $10 million in additional ticket revenues. Charity volunteers at Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors home games, as well as Ottawa Senators home games will carry the mobile devices. Proceeds will fund local charities including Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment's Team Up Foundation and the Ottawa Senators Foundation.

Quotes The new enhanced electronic 50/50 draws will help raise more money for charities that get youth involved in sports and recreation. " Charles Sousa Minister of Finance We are pleased to offer this electronic raffle product to our fans, and in doing so, raise even more funds to support our partner charities.
