Southeastern's Zoom into Careers Expands Programs, Locations for Junior High and High School Students this Summer


(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HAMMOND, La., March 11 -- Southeastern Louisiana University issued the following news release: Junior high and high school students can choose from an expanding list of exciting career fields at Southeastern Louisiana University this summer through "Zoom into Careers" workshops at all three Southeastern locations plus Northshore Technical Community College's Greensburg campus.



New to this year's Zoom lineup of 13 programs are emergency management and creative writing and publishing. Favorite programs from previous years to be offered include animation, automotive technology, culinary arts, criminal justice, industrial and engineering technology, moviemaking, photography, radio, television, theatre and web design.

"Our four-day workshops are designed to explore the variety of career paths available in each of these exciting fields. Participants attending Zoom workshops are exposed to a real work environment that focuses on teamwork and project completion," said Charlotte Collins, director of Non-Credit Programs at Southeastern. "At the end of the week, Zoom participants demonstrate what they have learned to family and friends." Workshops are open to all rising 7th through graduating 12th grade students and are scheduled on the main campus in Hammond, the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center in Walker, and at Southeastern's St. Tammany Center in Mandeville, as well as NTCC's Greensburg campus.


"To celebrate our sixth year," Collins said, "the program has partnered with area high schools and NTCC to provide a taste of work in various fields. In NTCC workshops, both two and four-year degrees and certifications will be introduced, as appropriate to each discipline.

Registration will be limited in each workshop to small groups, some as low as six participants. To ensure participation, Collins encourages interested students to register early. Participants can take advantage of early bird discounts of 15 percent by registering before May 8. Registration will continue through June 5 and is available online at www.southeastern.edu/zoom.

The 2014 Zoom into Careers workshops are: "Zoom into Animation" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Southeastern's East Stadium, Hammond; $280/$295. Students will learn the basics of computer animation from Dianne Yingst, including traditional animation and character design with a modern twist using Adobe Photoshop and Flash. The final class will showcase each student's accomplishments in one of Southeastern's state of the art computer labs.

"Zoom into Automotive Technology" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Livingston Center, Walker or NTCC, Greensburg; $280/$295. The program covers basic automobile systems and careers in the automotive field. Van Guarino, an ASE certified master technician, and Randy Konzelman, an instructor and former owner of a dealership, will teach participants about automotive systems as they build a model car to be entered in a car show.

"Zoom into Criminal Justice" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Livingston Center, Walker; $280/$295. Tiffany Chavers, a Southeastern University Police administrator and criminal justice instructor, will expose students to a variety of criminal justice professionals with insight into their roles and functions in the field. Field trips, guest speakers and professional demonstrations will be included.

"Zoom into Culinary Arts" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Southeastern's Pennington Student Activity Center; $280/$295. Chef Dustin Thomas, with over 10 years of experience, will organize participants into the various positions needed to run a successful kitchen. Participants will prepare and present a world class meal for friends and family at the conclusion of the workshop.

"Zoom into Creative Writing & Publishing" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Hammond, Creative Writing Lab; $280/$295. Taught by Southeastern professors and published authors Jack Bedell and David Armand, the workshop offers an opportunity to learn the modes and techniques used by contemporary fiction writers, essayists and poets. Students will explore the basics of professional publishing and design by producing a mini-journal of their own work.

"Zoom into Emergency Management and Disaster Science" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Livingston Center, Walker, $280/$295. Southeastern's criminal justice instructor Rusti Liner will teach participants about natural, man-made and technological disasters. Participants will experience the powerful winds of a hurricane inside a wind tunnel that simulates a CAT 1 storm, tour an emergency operations center, and simulate a disaster event.

"Zoom into Industrial & Engineering Technology" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Southeastern's Anzalone Hall, $280/$295. Michael Beauvais, assistant professor of industrial technology, and other design professionals will provide an orientation to industrial manufacturing processes. Participants will utilize 3D modeling software to create engineering drawings and get hands-on exposure to industrial manufacturing processes; watch molten aluminum being poured; take a fieldtrip to area manufacturing facilities, learn about the important role of solar energy; and build/"test" a simple solar collection device.

"Zoom into Moviemaking" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., St. Tammany Center, $280/$295. Participants explore the world of professional filmmaking by experiencing the different crew roles and steps in a professional film shoot, as well as post production editing and online distribution. Bob Krieger, a professional editor and producer, will teach creative and technical skills that can be applied to shooting videos from cell phones, cameras and DSLRs.

"Zoom into Photography" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., St. Tammany Center, $280/$295. Led by certified professional photographer Chuck Billiot, students are taught the instructor's "dare to be unique" approach to learning skills applicable to a career in professional photography.

"Zoom into Radio" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., KSLU, Southastern's D Vickers Hall, $280/$295. Students are introduced to sound, audio and the techniques and equipment used to capture and manipulate audio for radio use. KSLU General Manager Todd Delaney will help participants learn the fundamentals of radio.

"Zoom into Television" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., the Southeastern Channel, Southeastern University Center; $280/$295. Students attracted to careers in front of or behind the camera gain experience in producing news story packages at the Southeastern Channel. Workshops will be led by General Manager Rick Settoon, and students will produce two-minute news story segments that will be aired on the Southeastern Channel.

"Zoom into Theatre" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Vonnie Borden Theatre, D Vickers Hall; $280/$295. The workshop employs a hands-on approach covering all aspects of theater as students work with theater professionals and Southeastern Associate Professor James Winter to experience what goes into creating a live theatrical event.

"Zoom into Web Design" - June 16-19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Hammond, $280/$295. Students are taught how text, images and videos get from the World Wide Web onto their screen. Allanagh Sewell, a Southeastern computer science instructor, will help students design and construct a website using HTML coding and the industry-standard Adobe Dreamweaver software program. On the last day, students will present the website online for family and friends.
