Nomination of 2 candidates for JS women seats cancelled

(United News of Bangladesh Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dhaka, Mar 11 (UNB) – The Election Commission has cancelled the nomination papers of two candidates for the seats kept aside for women in Parliament on charge of telephone default.

They are Awami League candidate Sabiha Nahar and Jatiya Party contender Khorshed Ara Haque.

Returning officer Jesmin Tuli cancelled the nominations of the duo after scrutiny on Tuesday, said EC official Farhad Hossain.

He said Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) owes Sabiha Nahar Tk 11,835 while Khorshed Ara Haque Tk 223,488 as telephone bill.

If aggrieved, they can appeal against the cancellation on Wednesday, Farhad added.

On February 23, the EC announced the polls schedule for the reserved seats which are exclusively for women fixing the voting on March 29 and subsequently deferred the voting date to April 3.

According to the reschedule, the deadline for the scrutiny of nomination papers was March 11 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 18.

Out of the 50 seats, the ruling Awami League-led six-party alliance will contest the polls in 41 seats while Jatiya Party in six seats and the coalition of independent candidates in three seats.
