GOtv Subscribers Surrender Decoders

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Scores of people thronged Multichoice offices in Avondale yesterday to surrender their non-functioning GOtv decoders. Queues of people with the decoders formed at the offices following an announcement by Multichoice that subscribers would be called in for either US$75 refund or a swap with a DSTV decoder.

Multichoice Africa is part of the management of GOtv.

"GOtv apologises for the service interruption on GOtv and appreciates our subscribers' patience with this matter. All active GOtv subscribers are being offered a refund of US$75 when they bring in their GOtv decoder and the opportunity to purchase a DStv single view decoder which includes a month's subscription to DStv Access bouquet," noted Multichoice in a statement.

To ensure order and a smooth flow to the process, subscribers are being summoned to the Avondale branch in batches through text messages and social media announcements.

This development comes at a time when the terrestrial television had been scrambled for almost a month without official notice to subscribers.

In a statement this week, Multichoice revealed there was a misunderstanding among shareholders that led communication company Transmedia to switch off GOtv GOtv was launched in March last year with locals welcoming the development considering its relatively affordable rates.

It was offering a wide selection of local channels that included over 20 channels per frequency and featured in its bouquet TV channels such as Africa Magic Plus, Discovery, Disney Junior, E-Africa, Nickelodeon, Select Sport, Style, BBC World News and Al Jazeera among other channels.

ZTV Channel 1 and 2 and all ZBC radio stations were available on the bouquet.

Unlike other terrestrial channels, Go TV did not need a satellite dish and was transmitted by TransMedia Corporation.
