Youngsters pick up new skills in half-term week [Derby Evening Telegraph (England)]

(Derby Evening Telegraph (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) FROM creating robots to designing 3D models and building model steam trains, kids across Derby have been making the most of the school half-ter m. A raft of activities have been held at various locations in the city to keep children entertained.

At Pickford's House, fiveyear-old Luke Hawthorn and his 12-year- old cousin, Niamh Barry, were among a group of children who used metallic items, buttons and cut-outs to create their own robot. Meanwhile, it was all aboard at the Silk Mill as scores of children built their own model steam train in just one of a number of fun- filled activities. And, over at Quad, 11-yearold Ollie Brown joined in the fun as kids had a go at using computer software to design their own small scale 3D model.

Ollie said afterwards: "I really enjoyed designing the figure and found it interesting to learn new skills.

"I want to be an architect or games designer, so this class has really helped me." Pupils at most schools in Derbyshire are due back on Monday.
