California American Water Now Accepting Applications for Their 2014 Environmental Grant Program

CORONADO, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

California American Water announced today that applications are now being accepted for its 2014 Environmental Grant Program. Several grants for a combined total of $10,000 will be awarded. Project applications must be submitted by March 31, 2014.

Established in 2005, California American Water's Grant Program funds for innovative community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect watersheds, surface water and/or groundwater supplies throughout communities within the state.

"California American Water is proud to support the efforts of local organizations who share in our vision of environmental sustainability," said California American Water President, Rob MacLean. "I encourage municipalities, schools, environmental organizations and civic groups to apply for a grant to support projects that will benefit their local water ecosystem."

A wide variety of conservation projects are eligible for funding, such as watershed cleanups, restoration efforts, biodiversity projects (habitat restoration, wildlife protection), wellhead protection initiatives and hazardous waste collection efforts. To qualify, proposed projects must:

  • Be located within one or more of California American Water's service areas
  • Address a source water or watershed protection need in the community
  • Be completed between May 1, 2014 and November 30, 2014
  • Be a new or innovative program for the community, or serve as a significant expansion to an existing program
  • Be carried out by a formal or informal partnership between two or more organizations
  • Provide evidence of sustainability (continue existence after the American Water grant monies are utilized)

Projects will be judged based on criteria that include clarity of project goals, projected impact, nature and strength of collaboration with other community and/or municipal organizations and evidence that the project will provide sustainable environmental results after California American Water's funding ends.

In 2013, the program supported the WiLDCOAST Foundation, which was awarded $5,000 to fund its Tijuana River Action Initiative. By taking Coronado and Imperial Beach residents through a series of cleanup and restoration events, their project successfully increased the knowledge of local residents of the need to cleanup and restore the Tijuana River Watershed. Additionally, guided tours of two Tijuana River Watershed areas and educational watershed conservation presentations were held to increase participants' understanding of the role they play in helping to restore the Tijuana River Watershed.

The second recipient was The American River Parkway Foundation, which was awarded $5,000 to fund its "Strengthening the Parkway" watershed protection program. The program involved removal of invasive plants, river and trash cleanups, planting understory in established oak trees and installing dog waste stations. Volunteers throughout the Sacramento community took part in the program ensuring the parkway remains sustainable for all to enjoy for years to come.
