Shocking [Gulf Daily News (Bahrain)]

(Gulf Daily News (Bahrain) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) GRUESOME photos of a pit bull for sale in Bahrain showing scars of illegal dog fighting have shocked Internet users.

They were posted on Instagram by the owner, who was openly advertising the sale of the two-year-old animal for BD250.

He described it as an experienced fighting dog that "did not hesitate to fight".

The post followed a GDN report earlier this month exposing other disturbing photos on Instagram that appeared to depict a dog fight in Isa Town.

It is accompanied by other pictures of a small dog being advertised for sale as "bait" for dog fighting.

The Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) is now calling for the appointment of a government official dedicated to stamping out the blood sport.

"The problem of dog fighting in Bahrain does seem to be growing," said BSPCA spokeswoman Joyce Hughes.

"What we need is a dedicated person working within the government who can deal with it.

"At the moment it is not even clear which ministry is in charge of this problem or what they are doing to stop it.

"As an animal welfare charity we will do all we can to see this barbaric 'entertainment' stamped out, as should the authorities and the police.

"As we understand it, gambling is illegal in this country and these fights are used by gamblers to support their vice.

"We are told that thousands of dinars change hands in each fight." The GDN reported earlier this month that animal charities in Bahrain had been inundated with concerned calls from the public after three photos of a dog fight, believed to be taking place in Isa Town, appeared on Instagram.

The Instagram account was later made private, but people around the world had already reported the account and taken screenshots of the photographs.

Details of both men who have published photos of fighting dogs on Instagram have been sent to the police for investigation. [email protected] (c) 2014 Al Hilal Publishing & Marketing Group Provided by Syndigate.info, an Albawaba.com company
