Filing taxes by smartphone -- there's an app for that

(UPI Business News Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has begun accepting federal returns and taxpayers now have a smartphone app to file simple tax forms.

Filers with the simplest of simple tax forms -- Forms 1040EZ or 1040A without a lot of credits and deductions -- may want to consider one of several mobile apps being rolled out by big-name tax preparers this year, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

With the app, filers take pictures of their W-2s so the information populates the return. After checking the form for errors and answering a few more questions, filers file the return from their smartphones.

The apps are inexpensive, or free in some instances, the Tribune said.

Through Feb. 15, filing federal and state returns through the 1040EZ Tax app offered by H&R Block is free and a $9.99 for both filings after that at date. Federal returns completed through TaxAct Express, the app offered by TaxAct, are free while state returns cost $7.99.
