Eye strain is something of a hot topic in the...

(Optician (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Eye strain is something of a hot topic in the optical industry at present. Recent research from the Vision Council in America found that 70 per cent of adults had experienced digital eye strain through prolonged use of digital devices like tablets and smartphones, and many lens manufacturers have bolstered product line-ups with lens options that filter the blue light emitted by these devices.

The problem is by no means a new one, as the introductory editorial notes section of the journal from January 30 1914 shows. The cause of ocular fatigue 100 years ago was prolonged ‘near work’ rather than iPads, and many debated the best way to deal with the problem. Some thought the problem could be corrected with refraction, while others believed that this took for granted the ability of different types of eye to tackle near work without strain.

Elsewhere in the journal that week, there was a report on a Spectacle Makers’ Company meeting to discuss government plans to register opticians. The organisation decided to write to its members to consider what fees they felt would be suitable. In addition, the American Optical Company was invited to join Rice Leaders of the World Association – which worked to broaden prestige of merchandise and greater public knowledge of leading products.
