NICC works to prevent data breaches [Telegraph-Herald (Dubuque, IA)]

(Telegraph-Herald (Dubuque, IA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) In the wake of major data breaches at national retailers, Northeast Iowa Community College Board of Trustees recently learned more about the college's efforts to limit access to confidential information and further strengthen data security.

"Incidents of breaches of sensitive and confidential information are reported frequently across the country," said Rhonda Seibert, NICC information security officer and Calmar campus provost, in a press release. "Education and the health care industry are also prime targets." At the meeting Monday, Seibert said the work of a 20-member information security team includes the electronic archival of student records to reduce paper-based files and performing cyber- security updates to prevent breaches to the college's computer network.

Other measures included ongoing education and awareness programs for employees who are responsible for responding to inquiries and routinely work with confidential information. Recent updates include the moving to secure, electronic systems for student refund processing and the transfer of data among NICC campuses and centers.
