SIIA Welcomes PCLOB's Independent Review of Surveillance and Security

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 -- The Software and Information Industry Association issued the following news release: The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade association for the software and digital content industries, today welcomed the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board's (PCLOB) independent review of surveillance and security. SIIA president Ken Wasch said he is not in a position to comment on PCLOB's legal analysis, but issued the following statement in reaction to the report: "We commend the PCLOB for conducting an independent review of surveillance programs and submitting the results for the President and Congress to consider. SIIA and ITI's global principles specifically call for this kind of independent review. More independent analysis is needed, but this report should be taken as a valuable viewpoint as reform proposals are developed.

"It is crucial for governments around the world to engage in global dialogue regarding policy reforms on surveillance. As more work is done, we strongly encourage the Administration and Congress to consider the seven Global Principles issued by SIIA and the Information Technology Industry Council. (ITI). Our principles call for greater transparency, appropriate oversight, and enhanced multi-national dialogue among all governments engaged in surveillance activities."
