Normal Temps Predicted for Saturday's Securian Winter Run

ST. PAUL, Minn. --(Business Wire)--

The National Weather Service predicts the high temperature in St. Paul Saturday January 25 - the day of the Securian Winter Run - will be 18 degrees. Runners who are used to cold weather should find the conditions normal for January and manageable for those who know how to suit up for a winter run.

Registration available through race day
Online registration is available through Saturday, January 25 at 8:45 AM. In-person registration and pre-race packet pick up is available Monday through Friday at the Run 'N Fun stores in St. Paul and Burnsville. As always, same-day registration is available too. Look at the registration form, downloadable at securianwinterrun.com, and find complete details on parking, registration fees and the many services offered to Securian Winter Run participants.

The Securian Winter Run includes a half marathon (a qualifying event for the Twin (News - Alert) Cities Marathon), a 10K and a 5K. All start and end at the same location at Sixth and Jackson next to the Securian Campus. Start times are staggered.

In additionto the mug all registrants receive, the first 1,000 people who check in Saturday morning can choose from one of three additional gifts - an ear band, socks or a shoe wallet.

The biggest warming house
"Our race starts and ends indoors - we don't know of any other winter race that can make that claim," said Lori Koutsky, Community Relations and Foundation manager, Securian Financial Group. "We open our downtown St. Paul campus every year to the 1,500 - 2,000 people who enjoy our event. There's plenty of room in our lobbies and skyways for everyone to keep warm until their event starts and warm up after they finish." There also will be tents and water stops along the route.

Hot food and beverages will be available after the race, along with bananas and bottled water. There's a secure place for runners to check their gear while they're running. When they're done they can stroll down the skyway to the YMCA for a shower.

Time your sockball
In addition to the Securian Winter Run, people can register for the World's Coolest Sockball Throwing Contest. The Saint Paul Saints will set up their radar-equipped pitching booth for anyone who wants to pitch three sockballs (or regular baseballs) for $1. All proceeds and sockballs go to Listening House, a nonprofit that serves the homeless in St. Paul. Think Bank, which has a branch office on the Securian campus, will match the Sockball proceeds up to $500.

A spectacular sendoff
Fireworks are a new addition to the Securian Winter Run for 2014. Right after the air horn sounds for the start of the half marathon, ground fireworks will be ignited a block away. Runners can watch the show as they trot past the display.

A Winter Carnival tradition
The first winter run was held 34 years ago when a group of Securian employees organized a full marathon that started and ended at Holman Field. Twenty years ago, Securian Financial Group stepped in as an official corporate sponsor for the run, which had become a Saint Paul Winter Carnival event. It is now a keystone Winter Carnival event.
