HC asks Gavit, kin to reply in assets case [DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India)]


(DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mumbai: The Bombay high court has asked state cabinet minister Vijay Gavit to file his reply to a public interest litigation (PIL), alleging that he and his family have amassed wealth more than known sources of their income. A PIL had been filed by NGO Nagrik Chetna Manch and Sham Deshpande and other activists from Nashik through advocate Uday Warunjikar, seeking prosecution of Gavit and his family members under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, Income Tax and Indian Penal Code.



The PIL has made Gavit, his wife Kumudini (president of zilla parishad of Nandurbar), his brother Sharad (cabinet minister and MLA from Navapur) as respondents.

Pradip Patil, counsel for Gavit and his wife, and VA Gangal, counsel for Sharad, said they want to put forth their stand before the court.


Separate inquiries have been initiated by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the Income Tax (IT) department and the Directorate of Enforcement (ED). The court has clarified that the inquiries by IT, ED and ACB shall not be stalled due to pendency of hearing of the PIL.

Warunjikar said that Gavit's father, Krushnarao, was a teacher in Nandurbar and owned a house and eight hectares of land. Gavit, who worked as a lecturer at a college in Aurangabad till 1994, had shown his last monthly salary as Rs9,715. Sharad worked as a Class IV employee in Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation. His last drawn salary in 1994 was Rs1,290.

Gavit was elected as member of legislative assembly in 1994 and given charge of Tribal Development Department. When Gavit became minister, Sharad was transferred to Mantralaya as a Special Officer.
