China Telecom (CHA.NYSE; 00728.HK) likely to cut 50 pct broadband investment

BEIJING, Nov 25, 2013 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China Telecom (CHA.NYSE; 00728.HK), one of China?s three basic telecom operators, is likely to cut its investment in broadband development by 50 percent, said Wei Leping, director of the China Telecom Science and Technology Commission, on Monday, the telecom news portal c114.net reported.

Wei said at a forum related to optical communication that the company may divert its investment in broadband to the development of 4G LTE networks. But he said China Telecom has not made a decision on this issue and will hold a discussion meeting in December.

He said it would be difficult for China Telecom to complete LTE network construction within five years without changing its investment structure.

According to Wei, China Telecom had 20 million fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) customers by the end of last year and became the world?s largest FTTH operator. But he added it was impossible for the company to complete FTTH construction in three years. (Edited by Li Xiaoyu, [email protected])
