Maji IV Saline Bag from Fosmo Med Finalist in Philips Innovation Fellows Competition

SAN MATEO, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

The Maji IV saline bag from Fosmo Med has been selected as one of five finalists in the Philips Innovation Fellows Competition. The competition searches for meaningful innovations that make a difference in people's everyday lives.

"We believe that nothing is more important than saving lives around the world," says Ben Park, CEO of Fosmo Med. "This year, approximately 2.2-million children will die of dehydration-related diseases. Many of these lives could be saved if the victims had access to the most basic medical device: an IV saline bag."

Huge potential life savings

Today's saline IV bags are more than 99-percent water They're expensive to ship, have a short shelf life, and are prone to leakage.

Fosmo Med believes it has a better solution. The company's Maji product revolutionizes the logistics of IV bags by shipping them without water. Once onsite, Forward Osmosis technology converts dirty water to a sterile solution without requiring any power.

A one-liter Maji bag weighs about 3 ounces, compared to a traditional saline IV bag that weighs about 2.3 pounds, or a little less than 38 ounces.

"Maji will enable many more IV bags to be shipped for the same cost, stored safely and transported to remote sites," says Park. "The potential life savings could be in the millions annually."

Philips (News - Alert) employees across North America are voting now for the $60,000 top prize winner in the annual competition.
