Siprotec 5 gets standard boost [Gulf Industry]

(Gulf Industry Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Siprotec 5 protection devices from the Siemens Smart Grid Division are the first devices of their kind on the market worldwide to be certified under IEC 61850, Edition 2. As a result, protection solutions with unlimited interoperability between protection devices of different manufacturers are now an option in substation automation.

The Siprotec 5 protection devices are the first devices of their kind on the market worldwide to be certified under IEC 61850, Edition 2 "This means that network operators and suppliers can save money by seamlessly integrating Siprotec 5 devices into their existing, proven infrastructures. And thanks to the certification under IEC 61850, Edition 2, these Siemens products have the 'future built right in' for long-term investment security," a Siemens spokesman said.

IEC 61850 has become a firmly established standard in substation automation. But it is now also more than just an Ethernet-based protocol. With Edition 2, the protocol has expanded into additional power supply areas, because it defines the engineering process, the data and service models, the conformity test, and all the communications functions for substations. This expands the range of applications for Siprotec 5 protection devices. The devices were tested in the Kema lab in Arnheim, the Netherlands, and certified according to rules defined by the UCA (International Users Group), a non-profit organisation of network operators and manufacturers headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina in the US.

Siprotec multifunction devices were designed for protecting, automating, measuring, and monitoring high-voltage and medium-voltage networks. In addition to enabling the use of data from different manufacturers' devices, however, they also allow redundant data transmission within the grid. For this there are two new Ethernet redundancy protocols – HSR (high-availability seamless redundancy) and PRP (parallel redundancy protocol) – for all Siemens protection device series. These protocols were designed for mission- and time-critical applications in which communication interruptions or delays may not occur. Both protocols comply with the IEC 62439-3 standard for high-availability industrial Ethernet communications networks. HSR and PRP allow the systems to continue operating even in the event of a malfunction: A communication path remains in place between the two protection devices even if a network error occurs.

Additional devices can also be installed or removed without requiring changes to other devices in the grid, so network operation can continue without disruption. The new redundancy protocols can be used not only in new systems but in the more than 150,000 Siprotec devices already installed worldwide. All that's necessary is a firmware update on these devices. With its Seamless Ethernet Media Redundancy Suite – which includes field devices with an integrated switch, software drivers for substation automation, and the necessary network components – Siemens is the only supplier worldwide that offers its customers a consistent, end-to-end solution.

Energy-efficient, eco-friendly solutions for setting up intelligent power supply networks (smart grids) are is part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2012, revenue from the portfolio totaled about 33 billion euros ($44.1 billion), making Siemens one of the world's largest suppliers of eco-friendly technologies.
