ITT Exelis wins global satellite communications system contract from DISA

Jun 05, 2013 (M2 EQUITYBITES via COMTEX) -- ITT Exelis (NYSE:XLS), an aerospace, defence, information and technical services company, announced on Tuesday the award of a contract by the Defence Information Systems Agency (DISA) to develop a global netted communications capability for the agency's Distributed Tactical Communications System (DTCS).

Financial details of the contract were not available.

Under the current development phase of DTCS, called 'Global Services', Exelis will provide the Department of Defense and other high-priority/special users with a satellite-based, global 'push-to-talk' netted-communications service for voice and data. This on-the-move, beyond line-of-sight capability will reportedly provide enhanced communications and global connectivity through small, low power devices without reliance on local infrastructure.

Exelis said, that working closely with DISA and industry partner Iridium Satellite Inc, it will deliver a Global Services capability fully supporting the currently fielded DTCS RO Tactical Radios and will establish an 'open standard' interface so industry can develop a wide variety of additional DTCS devices.

According to the company, work on the contract, which was awarded on 3 May 2013, will be performed at the Exelis facility in Dulles, Virginia, and is expected to be demonstrated in 2014.
