Silver Spring Networks Extends Smart City Infrastructure Platform with New LED Roadway Lighting Collaboration

PHILADELPHIA & REDWOOD CITY, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Today at the LIGHTFAIR International conference, Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (NYSE: SSNI), a leading networking platform and solutions provider for smart energy networks, and LED Roadway Lighting, a leading designer and manufacturer of LED-based street and area lighting fixtures and control systems, announced a collaboration to deliver the market's first networked, field swappable intelligent streetlight solution. As part of the collaboration, Silver Spring plans to integrate its industry-leading networking platform into the new LED Roadway Lighting NXT module to deliver a highly reliable solution for highway and municipal streetlight operators to improve energy efficiency, better manage and control streetlight networks, extend the lifespan of streetlights deployed in the field, and easily upgrade existing streetlight networks.

"Today, the top leaders in their respective industries are joining forces to raise the bar for intelligent streetlights and deliver a game-changing solution for the Smart Cities of the future," said Sterling Hughes (News - Alert), Senior Director of Advanced Technology, Silver Spring Networks. "Silver Spring's proven IPv6 networking platform is the perfect complement to LED Roadway's first-of-its kind NXT module, unlocking enormous value for lighting operators and making streets safer for citizens."

"Coupling Silver Spring's leading networking platform with the market's most efficient and most reliable streetlights from LED Roadway eliminates waste, improves ROI, and delivers improved lighting services for our communities," said Chuck Cartmill, CEO of LED Roadway Lighting. "Moreover, it enables public lighting to become an integrated part of the smart grids and smarter city infrastructure which Silver Spring is leading globally."

Efficient streetlights are a major cost, environmental, and safety consideration for utilities, lighting networ operators, and municipal governments around the world. The new Silver Spring and LED Roadway Lighting solution is expected to deliver up to 65% in energy savings over traditional high-pressure sodium streetlights due to advanced LED technology and controlled dimming capabilities. The new solution is also designed to help operators reduce maintenance costs by up to 90% because of automatic streetlight failure notification and extended deployment lifespans.

Silver Spring provides a high-performance IPv6-based network that establishes a communications foundation for a city's assets regardless of distribution topology. Silver Spring is expanding the functionality of its smart infrastructure platform to support Smart City solutions such as intelligent street lighting, traffic signal control, and electric vehicle charging, among others.
