Arlene Wall sworn in to Biloxi council

BILOXI, Jan 22, 2013 (The Sun Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Arlene Wall is representing Ward 5 on the Biloxi Council after she was sworn in Tuesday to fill the remainder of the term of her husband, Tom Wall, who died Jan. 7.

Her sons Jeff and Bob Wall stood at her side while Municipal Court Judge Eugene Henry administered the oath of office in the same council room where her husband served for 20 years. Also with her were her daughter-in-law Paige Wall and her granddaughter and husband, Jheri and Wesley Brechtel.

"I'm excited about it," she said before being sworn in and given a standing ovation by the crowd.

"I'd like to just say thanks for the support," she said.

Wall said she was unsure when Mayor A.J. Holloway suggested she fill his term after her husband died, but she decided to accept.

Councilman Bill Stallworth moved and seconded for the entire council that her nomination be approved.

"Thank you for your vote," she told the council. "Tom would be happy." A reception followed, and then Henry also swore in Stacy Thacker as city clerk to replace Brenda Johnston, who retired in December, and Michelle Wescovich and Chief Administrative Officer David Nichols as deputy municipal clerks.

The council also honored Roy Mattina Sr., the only remaining council member who served before the city form of government was changed in 1981.
