City man arrested in fatal New Year's shooting

Jan 18, 2013 (Reading Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Reading man was arrested Thursday in the fatal shooting of another city man on New Year's Day.

Jesus Guillermo Rivera, 26, of the 200 block of Carpenter Street was taken into custody at City Hall after going there for questioning, investigators said.

Rivera was charged with conspiracy to commit homicide, solicitation to commit homicide and aggravated assault. He was awaiting arraignment late Thursday in Reading Central Court on charges stemming from the death of Luis Medina, 19.

Medina was fatally shot about 2:30 a.m. Jan. 1 outside his home in the 100 block of South Third Street while intervening in a fight between his brother-in-law and three men, investigators said. One of those men was Rivera, police said.

Police said the shooting followed a fight earlier on New Year's Eve in the block. Rivera left the area and returned with some friends.

He told police that he was involved in the initial fight and was returning to the block to "get revenge." Rivera also said he knew that one of his friends had a gun when they went back to the block.

Medina and two of his brothers went outside to help his brother-in-law when Rivera and his friends showed up about 2:30 a.m.

At least one of the attackers shot Medina and one of his brothers, a 22-year-old who also lives in the block.

The brother, whose name police did not release, was taken to Reading Hospital. Further information about him was unavailable.

Police have not released any information about the nature of the initial dispute.

They are still investigating.

It was the first of two pre-dawn slayings about 11/2 hours apart on New Year's Day.

Najeebie Johnson, 34, of Reading was fatally shot in the 900 block of Amity Street after he stopped with some friends to ask a pedestrian for directions to a club about 3:50 a.m., police said. The pedestrian pulled out a gun and fired several shots into the car, grazing a passenger's shoulder and hitting Johnson.

No arrests have been made in that case.
