UN chief discusses Japanese economy with new PM

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 09, 2013 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced his support to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's commitment to strengthening Japan's economy and reconstruction, said a spokesman.

Ban conveyed his support in a telephone conversation with Abe on Tuesday, in which he also congratulated Abe for his returning to premiership, according to spokesman Martin Nesirky.

As Japan is still recovering from the 2011 devastating earthquake and tsunami, the new prime minister has formed a "crisis breakthrough" cabinet to focus on reconstructing the worst-hit north and revitalizing Japan's stagnant economy.

In the phone conversation, Ban stressed the importance of Japan's role in northeast Asia, and the two also talked about the recent satellite launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said the spokesman.

Abe also expressed his determination to strengthen the relationships between Japan and its neighboring countries, he added.
