Cops: Men crashed getaway car after high-speed chase

Jan 03, 2013 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Three men are in custody after allegedly robbing a Tinley Park cell phone store, leading police on a high-speed chase and crashing their getaway car, police said.

The three suspects were arrested Wednesday a few hundred yards from where their white Buick had skidded off of U.S. Route 6 near New Lenox, about 15 miles from the T-Mobile cell phone store they had allegedly robbed about an hour earlier. Police were called to the shop by workers, who reported three armed men had entered the store and stolen "a bunch" of cell phones, Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer said.

Neubauer declined to give details about the robbery until the men are charged.

Tinley Park officers chased after the Buick, winding through town and onto Interstate Highway 80 before giving up the chase after a few miles, near the LaGrange Road exit, Neubauer said.

"It was getting to be too dangerous, too much of a hazard," Neubauer said.

Police in New Lenox spotted the empty car minutes later, stuck in a ditch alongside Route 6 east of Cedar Road in unincorperated Will County near New Lenox and just east of the Route 6 exit from I-80, New Lenox Deputy Police Chief Bob Pawlisz said. No other vehicle was involved in the crash, he said.

Illinois State Police troopers and a search dog joined officers from the Will County Sheriff's Department and Manhattan and Mokena police in a brief search. The three men were found hiding near a house a few hundred yards from the crash scene, Pawlisz said.

The three suspects are in custody at the Tinley Park police station and are awaiting charges, Neubauer said. Police have recovered several of the stolen phones, which the suspects allegedly threw from the vehicle during the chase, Neubauer said.
