Congo Peoples Republic of : VMK launches its first designed smartphone in Congo [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Elikia(which means "hope" in Congolese), world's first African-designed smartphone has made its entry into the market. The phone was originally scheduled for October, however its launch was delayed due to an explosion in demand, Verone Mankou said.

In terms of specs, the Android-powered, Elikia doesn't rival Samsung's Galaxy S III. It has a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 pixel screen, a 650Mhz processor, 512MB of RAM with front- and rear-facing cameras at 5-megapixels.

The main attraction of the phone is its price. It is priced $170 off-contract and this is precisely why Android has become the top smartphone OS in the world.

Since Google Play won't take Congo's credit cards, VMK, the smartphone manufacturer, has its own app store and prepaid gift cards.

The phone is shipping with the obsolete Android 2.3 and also comes with the Holo Launcher pre-installed to simulate Android 4.0.

According to reports, local carriers Airtel, MTN, and Warid are carrying the Elikia.
