Israel "deeply concerned" over DPRK satellite launch

JERUSALEM, Dec 13, 2012 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Israel on Thursday expressed " deep concern" about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's ( DPRK) latest satellite launch, describing the move as defying UN Security Council resolutions and undermining regional stability.

"In recent decades, North Korea has acted in ways that have endangered the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and the region of the Middle East," the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement, one day after official media of the DPRK confirmed that the country successfully launched and orbited an earth observation satellite.

The ministry said the launch violated UN Security Council Resolution 1874, which bans the DPRK from launches using ballistic missile technology.

"North Korea should indeed respect and comply with its international obligations and pursue policies and actions that contribute to regional peace and security rather than undermine them," the statement added.

Wednesday's launch marked the DPRK's second attempt this year to launch a long-range rocket. Its previous attempt in April ended in failure.

The DPRK stated that the satellite will be used for peaceful and scientific purposes only, adding that it will abide by international regulations. However, many countries have expressed regrets or concerns over the launch.
