China Mobile promotes digital music, to provide 1.68 mln music tracks

CHENGDU, Dec 10, 2012 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China Mobile (CHL.NYSE; 00941.HK), the largest mobile operator in the country, will adopt Dolby Pulse technology and its Mi-Cu player to provide digital music entertainment services in 2013, with the aim of offering 1.68 million legitimate music tracks to its 700 million users.

Meanwhile, compared with MP3, the Dolby high-definition music will save about 70 percent of Internet bandwidth for customers.

According to statistics from the China Internet Network Information Center, the number of China's Internet music users reached 386 million by the end of last year and wireless music users hit 700 million. The Internet music market is valued at nearly 2.8 billion yuan and music services have become the second largest Internet application after search engines.

China Mobile's wireless music base is the country's biggest legitimate (as distinct from pirated) music database as well as trading platform, and provides specialized music products and services for its users. The company now takes an 83 percent share of China's wireless music market. (Edited by Liu Xiaoyun,
