KDDI, Softbank release iPad mini cellular model

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, Nov. 30 -- (Kyodo) _ KDDI Corp. and Softbank Mobile Corp. on Friday began selling Apple Inc.'s iPad mini with cellular connectivity compatible with high-speed data communication using the LTE network service.

KDDI, the provider of "au" mobile communication services, is adding the iPad tablet devices to its lineup in addition to iPhone smartphones that it has been selling since October 2011.

Softbank monopolized sales in Japan of the iPhone as well as the iPad with cellular capabilities before KDDI's entry into the Apple device market.

Softbank and KDDI also released the new iPad 4, which is the same size as older versions of the tablet device but has higher functionality.

A Wi-Fi only version of the iPad mini hit Apple stores and major home electronics retailers on Nov. 2.
