Hughes awarded USD24m national broadband satellite system contract by Mexican government

Nov 19, 2012 (M2 EQUITYBITES via COMTEX) -- Broadband satellite networks and services company Hughes Network Systems LLC (HUGHES) stated on Monday that it has signed a contract to supply and build an 11,000-site broadband satellite network for the Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT).

Under the USD24m contact Hughes will bring high-speed Internet and voice connectivity to previously unserved regions across the whole of Mexico, connecting schools, hospitals, government locations, community centers and public calling offices in Mexico's 32 states.

The company said it is contracted to roll out the network within five months, beginning immediately. It added that the network will be operated by Telecomunicaciones de Mexico (Telecomm Telegrafos), a decentralised government office in charge of telecommunications in Mexico which has proven experience in satellite operations.
