Obituary: Geraldine Glenn / Longtime office worker for Steelers loved team

Nov 16, 2012 (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Geraldine "Gerry" Glenn's black-and-gold roots go way back -- not just to her family ties with the Rooneys but to 40 years as a ticket manager and office coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Her nephew, Art Rooney II, president and co-owner of the Steelers, said he worked alongside his aunt in the ticket office a week after the famous Immaculate Reception game that propelled the team into popularity.

"The phones were ringing off the hook, and the lines were wrapped around the stadium. It was a time that those of us who were there will never forget," he said.

"Gerry always kept her cool. Of course her patience was tried on occasions, like when there weren't enough tickets to go around, but she always handled those situations and did the best she could." Ms. Glenn died Monday in her North Hills home after battling cancer for eight months. She was 69.

Born to Martin and Mary Duffy Regan in 1943, Ms. Glenn grew up on the North Side and graduated from St. Peter High School in 1961. She attended Duquesne University and graduated in 1965 with a degree in education.

She taught at Mary Jane Cowley Elementary School in the city for several years before accepting a position as a ticket office assistant for the Steelers in 1972.

Ms. Glenn was promoted to ticket manager, a position she held for 20 years before moving into human resources. As an office coordinator, she "made sure everyone understood the ropes," Mr. Rooney said.

"She loved working with people and, of course, she loved the Steelers. We're a Steelers family," said her sister, Rita Heberle of Bethel Park.

Ms. Glenn retired in March as one of the Steelers' longest-serving employees. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with cancer.

"It was a sad day when she retired, and we're all sad that she didn't get the chance to enjoy a nice retirement," Mr. Rooney said.

Aside from her love of football, Ms. Glenn enjoyed dancing, reading and playing card games, especially bridge. She also was active in her church, St. Athanasius Parish in West View.

In addition to her sister Rita, Ms. Glenn is survived by her son, Michael Glenn of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and six other siblings: Martin Regan, Patricia Regan Rooney, Thomas Regan, Joan Regan and Evelyn Regan O'Brien, all of Pittsburgh, and Irene Hill of St. Davids, Pa.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today in St. Athanasius Church, 7 Chalfonte Ave., West View. Contributions may be made to St. Athanasius Community and Education Center or Animal Friends, 562 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
