BRIEF: Mesquite football coach Matt Gracey resigns

Nov 15, 2012 (East Valley Tribune (Mesa - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Mesquite football coach Matt Gracey has resigned after two years on the job, athletic director Jason Grantham said.

The Wildcats went 5-15 during his tenure and struggled to a 2-8 mark this year. Mesquite has been battling dwindling enrollment numbers and has seen its win total decrease along with participation. The team won nine games and made the 5A Division I quarterfinals in 2010, the last year under Mike Reardon, but has missed the playoffs the past two seasons.

Gracey, who came to Mesquite from California, will continue to teach at the school. Grantham said the tentative plan is to conduct interviews for the opening in mid-December and hopefully name a coach in January.

Mesquite drops down to Division II in the next two-year block, which could help the team become more competitive.

"I think that makes this an appealing job," Grantham said.
