The next big evolution in PCs will be gesture control, Lenovo says [Gulf News (United Arab Emirates)]

(Gulf News (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dubai: The interaction with computers will change completely in the next two to three years. Instead of touch and voice, the next big evolution will be gesture control and it is sure to happen, Gianfranco Lanci, senior vice-president at Lenovo Group and president of Lenovo EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), told Gulf News.

"Definitely, the PC market is certainly undergoing a big transformation into new form factors and types of choices. This will help the industry to come back to strong growth and vendors can offer solutions to their customers' needs," Lanci said.

With Windows 8, vendors can offer the "same user interface" from smartphone to tablet and to laptop.

"It is the lack of innovation and economic crisis in the last 12-18 months that has forced the PC industry not to register growth. But from next year we are sure to see a big growth in PC industry." The PC market is expected to fall 1.2 per cent to 348.7 million units this year, down from 352.8 million in 2011, according to IHS iSuppli.

But IHS sees strong rebound next year with more adoption of Windows 8 computers and ultra-thin notebooks gaining track.

Convertible laptops "In future we will not see a big difference between a tablet and a PC. Tablets and smartphones will play a big role in PC plus era," he said.

Already many vendors have launched convertible laptops which can be used as a laptop as well as a tablet.

Having witnessed success in the PC space, the Chinese giant is entering the smartphone business. Obviously their cash cow is still going to be computers, so they will use their PC business to expand into tablets and smartphones.

"We manufactured and shipped around 7 million smartphones in China in the last quarter. We've had success in China. For the next phase, we want to expand in the emerging markets first, and then mature markets. By the end of next year we will be launching smartphones in the Middle East. We see smartphones as part of PC plus strategy. We want to be a key player in the smartphone space," he said.

According to IDC data, Lenovo is placed number two in China after Samsung.

"Our entry into the smartphones category is a strategic move that reinforces our commitment to lead technology and innovation across four screens smartphones, tablets, computers and smart TVs." "We are ready to capture the opportunity Windows 8 brings to the industry and our aim is to become the top personal technology company in the next five years," he said.

He said the company will continue to make acquisitions to boost its growth in global markets, after buying Brazilian electronics maker CCE and US cloud computing firm Stoneware this year.
