1st Mainland-Taiwan Submarine Cable Starts Construction

BEIJING, Nov 07, 2012 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- After more than three year's preparation, the No.1 submarine cable project connecting mainland China to Taiwan was officially put into construction on November 6.

This is the first communication circuit directly connecting mainland China to Taiwan, which is invested and constructed by telecom operators from both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

The undersea cable, with a total length of about 270km and 205km buried in the sea, connects Fuzhou city of Fujian province to Danshui town of Taiwan. With 16 core fibers and the most advanced wavelength division multiplexing technology, the design capacity of the phase-I project is expected to reach 6.4T.

Currently, China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762, and SHSE: 600050) is working together with its partners from both sides of the Taiwan Straits to carry forward the construction of the project. The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2012 and put into operation in early 2013.
