MIIT confirms IMT spectrum, 4G industry to accelerate

BEIJING, Oct 16, 2012 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released a circular on the issue of international mobile telecommunications (IMT) spectrum planning Tuesday, and confirmed the 2,500MHz-2,690MHz to be the operating spectrum of time division duplex (TDD), said a China Securities Journal report.

The release of the document means China has officially announced its IMT spectrum plan for the 2.6GHz spectrum range.

With accelerating progress of LTE commercial operation across the world, China has promoted scale TD-LTE trial in full swing. China allotting the 2,500MHz-2,690MHz spectrum range as the IMT operating spectrum of TDD mode ensured that the country's indigenous 4G standard, TD-LTE, obtained all 190MHz bandwidth resources of the 2.6GHz.

The spectrum plan, released at a proper time, will guide TD-LTE equipment manufacturers and carriers to launch equipment research and development, network testing, and network planning, and effectively boost the industrialization and commercial operation of the TD-LTE industry.

The industry generally believed that China Mobile (CHL.NYSE; 00941.HK), the country's largest telecom operator who operates the TD-SCDMA network in the 3G era, would chose TD-LTE technology. The carrier has completed scale TD-LTE trial tests in the first half of this year, and launched a bid for TD-LTE equipment in August for the first time. (Edited by Luo Jingjing, luojj@xinhua.org)
