Tablets for kids top list of most-scanned holiday productsDec 01, 2011 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Mobile phones and tablets are coming into their own this year as comparison shopping apps help consumers find the best deals for the holidays. For a peak at the top-scanned items in the Chicago area and nationwide each week this holiday season, the Chicago Tribune asked ShopSavvy, a mobile shopping app provider, to tell us what their 10 million active subscribers are scanning. ShopSavvy allows shoppers to scan product barcodes, compare prices and make purchases from their smart phones. We limited the weekly ranking to product categories popular during the holidays: toys, consumer electronics, books, movies and video games. For the first official shopping week of the holiday season -- the seven days through Cyber Monday -- one product topped both the national and the Chicago list. LeapFrog Enterprises Inc.'s LeapPad Explorer Tablet scored the most scans, a sign of how more children are putting tablets on the wish lists this year. Among the other highlights: Chicagoans demonstrated a greater affinity for retro baking and heavy reading. Hasbro's Easy-Bake Ultimate Oven ranked No. 5 on the overall Chicago list and No. 2 on Chicago's toy list. It didn't appear on the national overall list and ranked No. 5 on the national toy list. Meanwhile, University of Alabama finance professor Benton E. Gup's 2003 book "Too Big to Fail: Policies and Practices in Government Bailouts" came in at No. 3 on Chicago's overall list and topped Chicago's book list. The book didn't appear on the national overall list and ranked No. 6 on the national book list. Not surprisingly, Apple Inc. took the top spot in the consumer electronics category. The computer company's iPod touch 8-gigabyte ranked as the most scanned item nationally, while Chicagoans favored the iPad 2 with Wi-Fi and 3G from Verizon.
