: The webinos cross platform open source consortium releases its first specifications for review
Nov 07, 2011 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- London and Berlin, The EU webinos consortium headed by Fraunhofer FOKUS is excited to announce that an important milestone has been achieved. The webinos consortium has released its first specifications and is inviting external feedback from car companies, phone manufacturers, mobile operators, TV companies, broadcasters and application and software developers. The specification builds upon the Device APIs and security work driven within W3C, HTML5, PhoneGap and the Wholesale Application Community (WAC), Already webinos members are developing implementations on different devices and operating systems to trial and enhance these specifications. The webinos objective is to define a ubiquitous platform for secure, interoperable web application deployment.
It is not just about getting web applications running in isolation on phones, but providing the technical architecture to allow web applications to run on, and communicate across, multiple device types (TV, Car, PC, Mobile).
webinos is pioneering the vision to define a ubiquitous platform for secure, interoperable web application deployment. Recent announcements from Tizen and Sony Ericsson/Sony all lend support to the vision of multi device and device intercommunication based upon web based applications.
- Incorporation of node.js technology into the implementation for both client and server processing - Innovative new protocols, device and user identity mechanisms, that forms a strong architectural foundation for running applications in web contexts - Mechanisms for remotely discovering and invocating services between applications and devices, both on the public internet and for local networking (WLAN, Bluetooth, NFC) scenarios The webinos consortium has been set up by 22 organisations, including global players such as Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia, BMW Research and Technology, Sony Ericsson and Samsung Electronics. Also a member of the consortium is W3C, the international internet standards body, which will ensure that the webinos work is consistent with current and emerging standards. Further webinos members include renowned universities and research institutes such as The University of Oxford, application developers and media companies - all of whom support the webinos vision: "Deutsche Telekom is anticipating the fast developments of the internet, the demand for usage of applications across screens and the existing technical barriers. Telekom welcomes the engagement of academia and industrial companies across the domains with the desire to overcome these technical barriers and with the vision to create an open source platform that allows applications to run across screens. We are committed to webinos and are encouraging others to contribute to and adopt webinos ." says Stephan Berg, Vice President Architecture Blueprints, Strategy & Architecture, Deutsche Telekom AG About webinos webinos (Secure Web Operating System Application Environment) will deliver a platform for web applications across mobile, PC, home media (TV) and in-car devices. The project receives ten million Euro co-funding, under the EU FP7 ICT Programme, No 257103, and will run for three years starting in September 2010. webinos has been initiated by a research consortium with the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS at the helm.
More than 20 partners are represented within the consortium.
