Sri Lanka fast tracks resettlement of remaining 10,000 internally displaced

COLOMBO, Sep 24, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Sri Lankan government is fast tracking resettlement of the last batch of around 10,000 internally displaced people still living in camps so that the process will be completed by the end of 2011, a government minister told parliament on Friday.

Resettlement Minister Gunaratne Weerakoon told parliament that the ministry was taking steps to resettle 7,427 people living in the last two camps by December.

There are 3,324 internally displaced people still living in a camp called Kadirgamar Relief Village in the north while another 4, 103 persons are housed in the Ananda Coomaraswamy Relief Village.

"There are 1,002 children under the age of five in these two camps. An additional 1,165 children under the age of 10 are living in the camps. There are also 1,528 kids between the ages of 10-18 residing there as well," the minister told parliament.

Earlier in the week the government announced plans to close down one of the largest internally displaced camps in the world that housed nearly 300 000 people at the end of Sri Lanka's three decade war that finished in 2009.

Titled "Menik Farm" the 2,097 families still residing there will be resettled as early as next month.

The Resettlement Ministry itself will cease to exist from early next year after its duties wind down with the resettlement of the last batch of internally displaced.
