Apple sues Samsung over patents in Japan

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, Sept. 8 -- (Kyodo) _ Apple Inc. of the United States has filed a lawsuit against South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. group firms in Japan for alleged patent violations, seeking 100 million yen in damages, sources familiar with the matter said Thursday.

The suit was filed with the Tokyo District Court against Samsung Japan Corp. and Samsung Telecommunications Japan Co., accusing them of violating Apple's patents on the iPhone smartphone and the iPad tablet computer with the Galaxy smartphone they sell in the Japanese market, the sources said.

The first hearing was held Wednesday and the Samsung side showed its intention to wage an all-out legal battle over the suit.

Apple wants a court finding that would have the effect of suspending the sale of Samsung handsets, the sources said.

Apple and Samsung have filed similar suits against each other in the United States and Europe.
