Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation Offers Free Ancestry Website

Jul 22, 2010 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation announced that it has been recognized for offering one of the Internet's free ancestry websites.

According to a release, the non-profit SMGF was selected for a top spot in the Best Social Networking Sites category of Family Tree Magazine's 101 Best Websites for 2010. The magazine will publish the list in its September issue, on sale now.

"We are pleased to be honored in this way by Family Tree Magazine, the leading genealogy publication in America," said Scott Woodward, SMGF's executive director. "Being listed among the magazine's top 101 Websites recognizes our unmatched resources for both family history enthusiasts and those wanting to unlock the secrets of their genetic origins." SMGF has compiled a database of more than 100,000 DNA samples from more than 170 countries representing roughly 90 percent of the planet's nations. Those genealogical records link customers to nearly 9 million ancestors and living relatives.

Family Tree Magazine praises SMGF's site for what it offers free, noting that, "You don't have to purchase a DNA test to search the databases here. The Y-Chromosome database contains results for more than 36,000 samples, linked to test-takers' pedigree charts; because only males have Y-DNA, this database is ideal for surname research. The mitochondrial database adds another 70,000-plus searchable test results and genealogies." It is SMGF's subsidiary, GeneTree, that serves as a consumer portal for commercial access to SMGF's correlated genetic and genealogical information. GeneTree offers family history consulting services and newly enhanced online tools that merge ancestral research techniques with results from GeneTree's Y-DNA (father-to-son genetic patterns) and mitochondrial (genetic markers passed from mothers to all children) testing products.

The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation is a non-profit research organization that has created a repository of correlated genetic and genealogical information.

GeneTree is a provider of genetic and family history services that unlock peoples' ancestral legacy.
