Japan, Australia to boost cooperation in broadband technology+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MELBOURNE, July 19 -- (Kyodo) _ Japan's Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Kazuhiro Haraguchi has agreed with Australia's Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Stephen Conroy to strengthen bilateral cooperation in broadband technology, Japanese officials said Tuesday.

Haraguchi's ministry has unveiled a project to give all households in Japan high-speed internet access by 2015 through fiber-optics, and Australia has a similar project with the same deadline.

The broadband accord came a day after Haraguchi reached agreements with Australian officials to strengthen cooperation in information and communications technology.

Haraguchi met separately on Monday in Sydney with Chris Chapman, chairman of Australian Communications and Media Authority, and Michael Quigley, chief executive officer of NBN Co., a public corporation established to build and operate a new high-speed broadband network.
