Nokia Siemens to upgrade Telefonica network to HSPA+Mar 30, 2010 (M2 EQUITYBITES via COMTEX) -- 30 March 2010 - Finnish-German telecoms equipment maker Nokia Siemens Networks said today it will upgrade the domestic 3G network of Spanish giant Telefonica (MCE: TEF) to evolved high speed packet access (HSPA+) for an undisclosed sum. Via the three-year project Telefonica Spain will be able to increase data download speeds from 7.2 Mb/s to 42 Mb/s, the maximum possible speed in the current generation of 3G networks. Nokia Siemens, which is a 50/50 joint venture of Finnish Nokia Oyj (HEL: NOK1V) and German Siemens AG (FRA: SIE), will deploy its long term evolution (LTE)-compatible Flexi Base Stations and its NetAct network management system. The project also envisages the possibility of providing 3G and GSM access simultaneously using the same 900 MHz band of radio spectrum, once the regulatory authorities allow it, Nokia Siemens said.
